Cancun, Mexico

Atlanta to Cancun was our first international trip with four kids (all under 7), so naturally—we were nervous. The last time I visited Cancun was in 2016 on a girls trip - safe to say that our experience in 2026 with 4 kids, was a bit different.

Perhaps daily life with 4 young kids has made my husband and I more resilient to high effort situations, but even with a big family with littles, the short direct flight, quick airport transfers, and our family-friendly all-inclusive resort made the trip feel easy. If you are in the midst of planning a trip with littles, I would suggest to add these criteria to your list when deciding the destination.

What makes Cancun so ideal for traveling with young kids is how family-focused everything feels. Many resorts are built with little ones in mind—shallow pools, splash pads, kids clubs, and easy dining options. And the beaches? Soft white sand, warm water, and gentle waves that are perfect for toddlers to safely play.

Beyond the resort, Cancun offers the perfect mix of easy excursions, cultural experiences, nature activities, and kid-friendly adventures. One of our biggest priorities (especially for our animal-loving son, who chose Mexico for his birthday trip!) was wildlife—and Cancun delivered in the best way.

Important Tip About Transit in Cancun

One of our best travel decisions was booking this private transportation instead of group tours.

  • It ended up being more cost-effective than resort-recommended partners, which are often tied to hotel partnerships and not always the best value

  • It gave us much more flexibility with timing, instead of being locked into group schedules

  • It provided peace of mind knowing we didn’t have to hail taxis or worry about finding a vehicle large enough for our family

  • Most importantly, they provided car seats, which made every outing feel significantly smoother and far less stressful with younger kids

Whether it is in Cancun or another destination, booking private transfers with carseats and boosters takes away a big stressor for families. Check out GetTranfer.com for more options in your destination.

Activities with Kids Near Cancun

Exploring Xcaret Park

Xcaret Park was our “big outing” of the trip—and it truly lived up to the hype. It’s definitely a bit of a splurge, but for us, it was absolutely worth it for how much there is to see and do with kids.

What we loved most was the variety without ever feeling rushed. We started the day with the sweetest newly hatched chicks, which immediately set the tone for how kid-friendly the park is. From there, we explored colorful parrots and flamingos, spotted a jaguar, wandered through the aquarium, and walked through one of the most beautiful aviaries we’ve ever seen.

There were also great hands-on experiences the kids loved, like making clay creations, plus a dedicated children’s world area with a kid-friendly cenote and a climbing space where they could run and play.

We also booked an additional experience for my husband and our older kids to swim with dolphins. Although it is within Xcaret Park, purchasing the tickets is done separately from the main Xcaret Park admission through the Delphinus Dolphin Swim provider.

The team was professional and efficient, and the facility felt well-run with dolphins that appeared healthy and well cared for. Compared to a dolphin experience I did years ago, the conditions here felt significantly improved and more thoughtfully designed. If you opt for this activity, make sure to book in advance as they tend to sell out.

Around the park, there were also plenty of spots to rest, grab food, and reset when needed—which made a huge difference in keeping the day enjoyable rather than exhausting. We ate at the restaurant Yucatan, and enjoyed the view and the food!

The overall visit felt like an adventure, but one that was thoughtfully designed for families. It never felt overwhelming—just a really thoughtful mix of nature, culture, and play that worked so well for our kids’ different ages and energy levels. For our next visit when our kids are bit older to leverage the theme parks, it is on our list to splurge a bit and stay at the Xcaret Hotel.

Resort Days at Paradisus Playa del Carmen

Some of our favorite moments from the trip were actually the slowest ones—spent right at our resort. Staying at Paradisus Playa del Carmen was a game changer with four little kids. Everything was designed to make family travel feel effortless, and targeted to families with young children (even though our child-free friends recently stayed on the adult side of the resort and enjoyed it as much!).

Location:

Just about 45 minutes from Cancun International Airport, Playa del Carmen is an easy, low-stress base with little kids—close enough after a travel day, but far enough to feel calmer and more relaxed than the Hotel Zone. With soft white-sand beaches and typically gentler waves, plus easy access to family-friendly highlights, it gives you that perfect balance of convenience, fun, and laid-back vacation vibes.

Pools & Splash Zone:

The pools alone could have kept our kids entertained for days. There were shallow areas perfect for little swimmers, along with a splash zone that felt like a mini water park. Our kids aren’t strong swimmers, but the kiddie pool with a ship feature made it easy for us to relax while they played safely nearby. This being said, we encouraged our kids to keep their Limmy Swimvests on the whole time, which also helped us feel more relaxed. (If interested in purchasing these for water time, use Discount Code: SHAINAREHMANN.)

Of course, being able to sip (or honestly devour) unlimited virgin piña coladas made the whole pool experience feel even more like a vacation.

Beach:

The beach at Paradisus Playa del Carmen was perfect for young kids—soft white sand and gentle waves made it easy for them to play and splash without worry. Lounge chairs are available for guests on a first-come, first-served basis, with the closest spots reserved for “Family Concierge” guests if you choose to upgrade (we tried it on our final day and loved the added convenience - wish we had upgraded earlier in the trip!).

Kids Club & Activities in the Lobby:

At Paradisus Playa del Carmen, the kids activities worked for us—but it really depends on your expectations:

👶 Kids Club Setup

  • Split into two age groups: 1–4 and 5–10

  • Older kids: scheduled activities (yoga, sandcastles, face painting) + free play time

  • Younger kids: more low-key, with TV sometimes used to help calm upset toddlers (been there 🙋‍♀️)

🎯 Overall Experience

  • Not the biggest or most elaborate kids club

  • Best for shorter stretches vs. full-day childcare

  • Worked well for us since we only used it ~3 hours total

⚠️ Good to Know

  • If you’re counting on the kids club daily so you can fully unplug, this may feel a bit hit-or-miss depending on your kids

🎉 Extra Activities Around the Resort

  • Rotating pop-ups near the lobby: bounce houses, mini golf, face painting

  • Easy to drop into throughout the day

💛 Our Take

  • We like keeping our kids with us, so this setup worked well

  • Some families might find the lobby activity area a little busy—but for us, it added to the fun and flexibility

Restaurants:

At Paradisus Playa del Carmen, it’s an all-inclusive resort, which means most food and drinks are included in your stay—but a few important things help set expectations:

🍽️ Restaurant Reservations

  • Several sit-down restaurants require reservations

  • Popular time slots book up quickly

  • Most reservations are made at check-in (unless you have concierge-level access)

  • Flexibility is key when planning dinners

⏱️ Our Experience

  • We didn’t get every ideal time or first-choice restaurant

  • But we still made it to most of the ones we wanted by mixing up our schedule

  • If something wasn’t available, we pivoted without stress

🍴 Backup Option

  • Buffet is always available

  • Convenient and easy, but after a couple of meals you may want more variety

🍦 Easy Wins (The Kids Loved These)

  • Coffee bar available throughout the day

  • Snacks and sweet treats always within reach

  • Ice cream stand = daily highlight for our kids

💡 Overall Take
Go in with a flexible mindset, plan a few must-do dinners, and leave room to go with the flow—that’s what made it work well for us.

Photoshoot

The resort also offered a complimentary photoshoot around Paradisus Playa del Carmen, with the option to purchase any images you loved afterward. We had already booked a separate session with an off-site photographer, but it was still tempting—because let’s be honest, I can never pass up an easy, built-in photo opportunity, especially in a setting this beautiful.

Resort Convenience:

The convenience at Paradisus Playa del Carmen made a huge difference for us—and honestly, it’s one of the biggest reasons the trip felt so smooth with four little kids.

Everything is close. We could get from our room to the pool, meals, or activities in just a few minutes—which meant:

  • No long walks with tired kids

  • Easy mid-day nap breaks without disrupting the whole day

  • Quick resets when someone got overwhelmed or hangry

But the biggest benefit? Flexibility.
If the kids had energy, there was always something to do - particularly for younger children. If they didn’t, we could slow things down without feeling like we were missing out.

It created that sweet spot every parent hopes for on vacation: a trip that feels both relaxing and fun—for everyone.

Capturing the Memories with Flytographer

One of my trip highlights was the family pictures we received from using Flytographer. As parents, we’re usually the ones behind the camera, so having someone else capture our family in such a beautiful setting feels special.

The whole experience was easy and relaxed. Our photographer guided us just enough, but it never felt stiff or overly posed—instead, it felt like a fun walk on the beach with lots of natural, candid moments, which is exactly what you want with little kids.

Since outside photographers aren’t allowed on the beach at Paradisus Playa del Carmen, we had to pivot—but it ended up working in our favor. Our photographer suggested a quieter, more scenic beach near Crococun Zoo and even adjusted the timing to fit seamlessly with our plans that day. She was patient, efficient, and somehow managed to deliver our full gallery the very same day.

The process with Flytographer itself is also incredibly streamlined. You simply select your destination, browse photographer options, and submit a request for your preferred match. From there, you coordinate the details until everything—date, time, and location—is finalized. It’s easy, responsive, and well organized, which is exactly what you want when traveling with kids.

A Morning at CrocoCun Zoo

Our visit to Croco Cun Zoo was one of the biggest highlights of the trip. Unlike a traditional zoo, it was more interactive and engaging—which is exactly what kept our kids excited from start to finish.

The guided tour made everything so easy with four kids. We didn’t have to plan or navigate—just follow along while the guides brought the experience to life, pointing out animals and encouraging safe, hands-on interactions that felt both fun and age-appropriate.

Our son getting to hold a baby crocodile and snake was a highlight of the trip. I always feel a bit conflicted about zoos and animal wellbeing, but these animals seem to be truly adored by the staff. I also trusted the staff to keep the visitors safe - although I tended to keep the stroller with our younger two kids confined and away from getting too close to the animals.

If you’re considering Cancun with little kids, it truly offers that rare combination of ease, fun, and meaningful family moments. It’s the kind of trip that feels good while you’re there—and even better when you look back on it. We are already planning our next trip back to stay at the Xcaret Hotel or Hyatt Ziva Cancun, and definitely take a day trip to snorkel with turtles in Cozumel and experience the cenotes in Tulum. So much to do and see
